TOD Workshop, Ahmedabad

A 1.5-day workshop on Transit-Oriented Development was collaboratively organised by the UrbanShift team at the National Institute of Urban Affairs and the UN Environment Programme, with technical support from HCP Design, Planning, and Management Pvt. Ltd. and Dr. Rutul Joshi, Subject Matter Expert, NIUA. The workshop aimed to strengthen the capacities of city officials from UrbanShift partner cities and other TOD cities (as announced in the Union Budget of India 2024-25) on TOD principles and strategies for effective implementation across varied urban morphologies, legislative systems, and regulatory frameworks.

The event witnessed active participation from 30 officials representing 12 organisations across 9 cities (Pune, Surat, Chennai, Nagpur, Lucknow, Delhi, Hyderabad, Bangalore, and Ahmedabad). It also sought valuable feedback on the TOD Station Area Planning Guidelines, a key knowledge resource under the UrbanShift Country Project, being developed by UMTC. The Guidelines intend to demystify TOD, position it as a development tool to improve access to transit nodes, promote it as a regeneration strategy for brownfield areas, and provide flexibility for diverse urban contexts.

As the first in a series of capacity-building initiatives under the UrbanShift Country Project, the workshop empowered cities with sustainable development strategies and created opportunities for cross-learning, paving the way for a greener and more connected urban future.
